Analysis Of A Classroom Interaction

Within the field of education and language teaching over the last few years a distinct shift has taken place, resulting in many classroom interactions placing less emphasis on teachers and teaching and greater emphasis on learners and learning styles. This ‘learner-centred’ approach to education and ESL programs can be seen in many schools and language centres – indeed it is central to the approach taken at the school in question which will be used as the basis of the following classroom interaction study.

The school at which I currently teach has a large and successful language program running as part of an ‘International House’ attached to the main school. The International House supports upwards of sixty NESB students who are predominantly from East Asian countries such as China, Japan and Taiwan. The students arrive in Australia and are placed by the program directors into tiered ESL study classes. These classes accommodate beginner, intermediate and advanced/transition students – (transition students are preparing for admission into mainstream schooling and full immersion in the mainstream program.) A basic premise of the International School ESL program is that students must engage in meaningful activities, work in small classes and groups, take an active role in the learning process and feel they are part of a learning ‘community’.

When the students reach a level of communicative competency deemed by their ESL teachers and International House program consultants to be adequate, they are immersed in mainstream classes in the school according to their age. The following classroom interaction study aims to reflect on several performance standards and areas of interest – including what instructions are given to teachers, what aspect of language is expected to be learned in the lesson, what type of teaching resources and materials are used, what kind of learning is expected of the learners, and what teacher and learner roles are fostered in the classroom.

** Lesson analysis took place at the International House learning centre, with permission from Miss Kate Abrahams. The class consisted of seventeen ESL students, aged from 13 to 16 years – Intermediate level learning environment.

Instructions given to the teachers at the ESL centre ASAS:

The teacher of this particular class has been given quite clear instructions with regards to the learning aims and objectives of the language course which she is teaching. Students are enrolled in this particular course with the majority hoping to gain a ‘mainstream’ place in the school or similar high school in Australia. They require both communicative and socio-cultural elements in the curriculum – and it is the understanding of the language centre that the teacher will facilitate this throughout the course. Instructions are given for teachers to develop an awareness of different student learning styles and strategies, to take an active interest in their students’ lives, likes/dislikes and so on, and to provide a caring and supportive learning environment. Activities are aimed at providing students with opportunities to practice and produce language as well as learn and listen to language. The theories and work of the likes of Harmer reflect this ‘balanced’ approach (Harmer 1991: 41) and is certainly encouraged by the language school as an appropriate method of instruction and teaching.
Teachers are instructed to attempt to provide authentic and meaningful learning experiences – cognitive, mnemonic, metacognitive and affective strategies are encouraged to be utilized in the classroom also. As O’Malley and Chamot detail, cognitive strategies can help learners to make links between new and already known information (O’Malley and Chamot 1990: 167-168) and is highly desirable in a language learning classroom. Mneumonic strategies are suggested to teachers in the program such as when drilling some grammar rules and vocabulary but are not apparently widely used. Instructions on the use of metacognitive strategies in the classroom consist of several different learner surveys used by the school. Teachers are encouraged to have learners identify for themselves what kind of learners they may be, what problem solving strategies they may use, how to find task-relevant materials in the library and other areas.

Teachers are instructed to provide a comfortable, supportive and communicative learning environment for the students. The teacher involved in this research on a classroom interaction stated that “many of the students are far from home, living in the boarding house of the school or with ‘home-stay’ families and can be anxious and extremely home-sick and disoriented when they first come into the program…we are not just teachers, but have to be listeners, mentors and friends to these students whilst still maintaining a student/teacher relationship…it can be hard.” (K.A. 2004 interview)

Becoming Connected to the Truth of Who You Are

Comments Off 01 August 2010

It sounds really good that we desire to be totally connected – that we increase our spiritual might simply by giving all we have to Spirit. But that really scares a lot of people. They believe you have to go to a mountaintop somewhere, or escape into the wilderness in order to be that committed. But nothing could be further from the truth!

The truth is we are always connected, regardless of where we are or what we are doing. We cannot be not connected to Spirit! The issue is that we are not always grounded in that awareness of our connection ~ and that’s when we begin to feel a sense of separation. So to really increase our MIGHT, we must become so totally grounded in our awareness of our oneness with spirit that nothing can throw us off balance. Then it becomes a way of being to live life full out!

A great analogy of this is the ocean and the wave. They are one, and cannot be separated, yet each wave is unique and individual. However, it is still a part of the ocean. You can take a pail and bring some of the ocean water home collect some of the ocean water to take home – and you know that even though it is separated, it’s still the ocean. But a wave can no longer do what waves are meant to do, unless it is where it’s destined to be in and of the ocean. Only as a part of the ocean can waves live life full out!

It is the same with us! We are in and of this daily life we have chosen to live. Our adventure is to allow our Divine nature to unfold as we live our life full out! When we have that solid grounding in our oneness, it becomes second nature for us to give our all to Spirit.

The challenge remains: How do we do that? There are three ways you may want to try. It is the “3-S Formula for Living Life Full Out!:

SILENCE:

You create a solid grounding in Spirit by spending time in the Silence. The connection strengthens even if you think nothing is happening.

It’s like going to Weight Watchers! You stick to the eating plan, and each week you go in for your weekly weigh-in. You may not feel any different – but you find out you are a mere quarter of a pound lighter! It is so teeny you almost deny its value. But several weeks of this, and all of a sudden you are able to wear a pair of jeans that were uncomfortably tight, and now, magically, they feel great! You didn’t realize what was actually happening, until you performed some kind of action that made it real.

Spending time in the Silence is sort of like that. What you are doing is putting your Intuitive Connection on Alert. You’ll find that by spending time in the Silence, you begin getting messages, insights, ideas, strength, wisdom, things you need. By giving time to Spirit, you gain a life of spiritual growth, inner peace, and pure joy.

SERVICE (Through SHARING):

Albert Schweitzer said, “I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.”

It’s interesting that all of us can give. We all have gifts, talents, opportunities to help others. We just need to be aware that there are some things an individual can’t do alone. For example – We’ve read that people are able to hold more weight in one hand than the other. In fact, we bet we can think of something you can hold in your right hand that you cannot hold in your left hand, regardless of how strong you are! Ready? Stretch out your left arm – and bend it. Now, place your left elbow in your right palm. Okay – you are now holding your left elbow in your right hand. Show us how you can hold your left elbow in your left hand!! See – there are certain things we just can’t do on our own!

It’s amazing – whenever you are feeling particularly sorry for yourself, or going through a difficult time, one of the best remedies is to do something for someone else! It transforms your whole attitude!

There are lots of opportunities to serve: community projects; volunteering; visiting people in need or sick; taking food to a family in need. A first grade class in Green Bay WI saved their chore money and bought 22 baby books for a hospital’s newborn intensive care unit. A group of nursing home residents hand sewed quilts, which they donated to a homeless shelter in Ohio.

Giving and receiving is a cycle, and we get into that cycle through giving. It doesn’t have to be money. (A friend of ours observed that it was much easier for her to tithe when she had a little money than when she got a windfall!)

By giving to Spirit through sharing, you claim a permanent spot in the cycle of giving and receiving!

SNACKS!

We know – this sounds weird! But give us a chance to explain! What do you think about with snacks? Feeding yourself, in delightful ways that bring you joy! The snacks we’re including in this formula are low calorie/high Consciousness ones. Snacks like making time to feed yourself spiritually, by taking in books, classes, retreats, labyrinth walks, or group discussions.

The neat part is, just like food snacks, spiritual snacks become addictive. You find that the more you snack, the more you want! And the more you want, the more you snack! And the more you snack, the stronger your grounding in Spirit, the stronger your awareness of NO separation! And that changes the way you THINK – the way you ACT – the way you live your life! When you hit life’s little problems – or the BIG ones – they just can’t knock you off center! You are grounded, and able to stand firm in Truth.

This week, make your adventure to live life full out by give your whole self to Spirit! As you strengthen your grounding in Spirit, you’ll increase your spiritual might by practicing Silence sharing and spiritual snacking. We guarantee that your time will reap millions in spiritual currency. Don’t settle for a penny less!

The female kangaroo has a inimitable feature, which is the pouch it has in front of its body which is called the marsupium.

Tree kangaroos live above the ground in trees.

Larger types of kangaroo tend to shelter under trees or in caves or rock clefts.

Kangaroos are hunted for meat and the skin. Kangaroo meat is high in protein, zinc and iron. Australia exports kangaroo meat to more than 55 countries and it is considered as one of the finest game meat.

Some Kangaroo skins are transacted as furs while some are sold for the leather.

Diverse species of kangaroos have different diets.

Kangaroos have a very few natural predators. One major predator of the kangaroo which was the thylacine is now extinct. The other predators of the kangaroo which are now extinct are the marsupial lion, megalania and the wonambi. Selected of the prevailing predators of the kangaroo are the wedge tailed eagle, and other raptors, the Australian local dog known as dingo, foxes and feral cats.

Kangaroos are adept swimmers. The kangaroo frequently flee into waterways if possible and is pursued into the water; large kangaroos use its forepaws to hold the predator immersed as if to drown it.

The kangaroo has a unique way of evading predators. That is to hold the predator with its forepaws and pull out the vital organs of the predator with its hind legs. This defensive arrangement of the kangaroo is called disembowelment. Read more Varmepumper sommerhus

Using Natal Charts to Understand Yourself

Comments Off 09 June 2010

Most people know about the twelve horoscope zodiacs in astrology. they are one of the most popular and most prevalent forms of divinations used today, because we can still see our daily horoscopes in various media. However, what most people don’t realize is that there is an even better way to find out more about you, using the same technique. Using your birthday, exact time of birth, and place of birth, you can have your natal chart calculated.

Your natal chart can say a lot about how you live, personality, secret desires, business decorum, and all other aspects of your everyday life. While natal chart interpretations alone can reveal a lot, you can also find out your compatibility in business and love. In fact, you can even predict how well you will fare in a certain place. This is done through the different types of natal chart readings. Each has its own purpose, and can reveal information that you yourself do not know.

Synastry reports are basically two natal chart reports which are overlapped. They are then precisely calculated, based on the celestial bodies governing both charts. This will show how compatible the two individuals are to each other. A detailed report includes details on cosmobiology, harmonics, major influences, oppositions, and quindecs. A simple Synastry report could prove to work wonders for your relationships. You can get a lot of useful insight through Synastry reports.

Relocation reports can reveal much about your success in a certain place. If you’re moving to a new location, it is best to consult a relocation chart report. Its calculation is still based on your natal chart report, but with respect to the different celestial bodies governing the area you wish to relocate to.

Your natal chart report can reveal a lot of things about you. There are many free natal chart reports available in the web today.

It has been said that the astrological birth chart is separated into 12 signs or Zodiacs which include Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Every sign has diverse stages which match up to the beginning, middle, and end of the astrology birth chart Zodiac.

Each one of these zodiac signs has varied suggestions for your astrology chart, as well as on the location of your planet within zodiac and also the precise month and year you were born. Some other things that think about in astrology birth chart, like where the planets were with location to the astrological signs when you were born, and the movement of other stars in the sky, but your astrology birth chart will keep track of all of these factors.

This justification doesn’t make all of us believe in astrological chart as even it is may be comprehensive or modified for us, but it doesn’t indicate that it’s true. A number of people may say that their own hope is based on how they make their decisions and actions and not with the stars and planets. On the other hand whether you consider it or not is okay as long as you live your life that way you want to live it.

Wind Power For You

Comments Off 09 June 2010

If you’re purchasing Colorado land and you need to set up electricity, consider buying a small wind turbine. Using wind-powered electricity is fast becoming a popular choice for people who choose to live in rural areas. If you have Colorado land and you’re thinking about buying a small wind turbine, learn more before you buy to make sure it’s the best option for you.

Customers who use wind turbines on their Colorado land save money. You can lower your electric bill as much as 90% and many wind turbine consumers pay only $100 annually for their electricity even with a totally electric home. The cost to buy the wind turbine system and the amount of perpetual wind should all be factors to see if this is economically a good choice for you.

A small wind turbine is the best bet for rural Colorado land that’s just a few acres in size. The larger wind turbines aren’t always appreciated by neighbors and probably aren’t necessary to power your electricity. A small wind turbine on rural Colorado land should be at least 5-15 kilowatts in size in order to make a dent in utility bills. A typical home uses less than 10,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. A vacation or recreation property on Colorado land for sale today will use even less; so a small wind turbine should more than do the job.

There are tax credits and rebates available for wind turbines that you put on Colorado land for sale. The Small Wind Incentive Pilot Program (SWIPP) offer rebates up to $5,000 and the Highline Electric Association, Southeat Colorado Power Association, the Town of Este and the Sangre De Cristo Electric Association, Inc, have joined together with the Colorado Governor’s Energy Office to reduce the costs of the wind turbines and the cost for installation on Colorado land. Buyers of Colorado land for sale are also eligible to receive credit for excess energy that their home wind turbine systems produces.

In addition to the long-term benefits, you can receive rebates or tax credits when you install a small wind turbine on Colorado land for sale. The Highline Electric Association, Sangre De Cristo Electric Association Inc., Southeast Colorado Power Association and the Town of Estes Park have all partnered with the Colorado Governor’s Energy Office to reduce the costs of installing home wind turbines on Colorado land. Rebates up to $5,000 each are offered through the Small Wind Incentive Pilot Program (SWIPP). In addition, people who buy Colorado land for sale and participate are eligible to receive credit for excess energy generated by their home wind turbine.

Generally a home uses less than 10,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. A recreational or vacation property on Colorado land for sale will use even less; so a small wind turbine should be more than adequate. Larger wind turbines aren’t always highly regarded by neighbors, making a smaller turbine with at least 5-15 kilowatts in size a better choice, still able to handle the electricity load.

The Best Ways to Stop Smoking

Counting the Days and the Ways to Quit Smoking

Smoking is a nasty habit that can be difficult to break. Quitting smoking might seem like the obvious choice, but many people are reluctant to quit because they are aware of the many withdrawal symptoms that go along with quitting smoking. However, what these people do not know about are the many ways to quit smoking. Such a wide assortment of options for kicking the gross habit makes it easier for people to quit smoking once and for all.

Feeling Sick

People are often discouraged from quitting smoking because, regardless of the many ways to quit smoking that exist, the withdrawal can be a very difficult process. Your body becomes physically addicted to the nicotine and cigarettes, and it becomes used to putting things in the mouth. Employing one of the ways to quit smoking eliminates both of these factors, thus causing withdrawal.

People who experience withdrawal might have many different symptoms, including: cigarette cravings, irritability, frustration or anger, tremors, decreased heart rate, fatigue, restlessness, depression, increased appetite, constipation or upset stomach, anxiety or nervousness, difficulty concentrating, headaches, insomnia, and increased coughing. These symptoms can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks after you first find a way to quit smoking.

Taking the Plunge

Though quitting smoking is difficult, it is important that you do so for your on health, and for the health of those around you. Today, there are many different ways you can quit smoking. One of the most common ways is medication of some sort. There are many nicotine and non-nicotine medications available, such as a nicotine patch, nicotine gum, and Varenicline.

If you do not wish to take medication, then there are other ways to quit smoking as well. Hypnosis, acupuncture, behavioral therapy, and nicotine vaccination are all alternatives to using medication in order to quit smoking.

Management Skills One you have found a successful way to quit smoking, then you will still have to manage the cravings that might occur in your daily life. This requires using psychological strategies. For example, remind yourself about why you decided to quit. Another idea is to keep busy, so you do not constantly think about smoking.

Other people find it helpful to brush their teeth or drink water when they experience a craving. The trick is finding the strategy that works best for you. Although quitting smoking is a very difficult task, once you have done it, you will have made a very big accomplishment that you and all of your loved ones can be proud of.

A Truly Spiritual Human Experience While Drinking a Cup of Tea

Comments Off 09 June 2010

You can make great changes in your world by doing simple, small acts of kindness. Mother Teresa once said, “God does not command that we do great things, only little things with great love.” Guisepi, from FreeTeaPary.org is a perfect example of Mother Teresa’s words – and he’s doing so, one cup of tea at a time.

Offering free tea came naturally to Guisepi. Back in 2005, he began sharing cups of tea and snacks to those who would pass him on the street. With his truck parallel parked, it was easy for people to congregate and have discussions while sharing tea with complete strangers. Before he knew it, people from different educational and financial backgrounds, races, nationalities and ages were having a peaceful time together.

Originally, he served tea while visiting new towns to meet locals in the community. This was something he could afford to do and he truly enjoyed it. Meanwhile, participants of these parties conveyed to Guisepi just how much it meant to them to be a part of something so special. They would leave the party with a feeling of oneness and inspired to share it with others in the world.

Today, tea is served out of his Tea Bus that he calls, Special Edna, which is a short, yellow school bus. Its perfect size allows him to parallel park on major streets and has better fuel economy than if he owned a larger bus. “Special Edna” is his home and he graciously shares his traveling abode with anyone who cares to have a cup of tea with him.

People around the globe have been offering free tea to others throughout history. Guisepi is continuing a tradition that spans cultures and generations world wide, and it is still welcomed by citizens as a warm gesture of the human spirit.

Inspired by his actions, friends of Guisepi host their own forms of tea parties which warms his heart. While traveling through Northern California, he met a man who was so inspired that he made up his mind to follow a life dream to give free soup to people. Whether it is tea, soup, coffee, or any other offering, the underlying purpose is the same – to share an authentic human bond with others.

If you’ve never attended a Free Tea Party, I highly suggest you do. Either attending one of Guisepi’s parties or hosting your own – it is truly an experience you’ll never forget.

Luckily, I was able to attend one of his free tea parties in his magic bus in Los Angeles. Over the course of a few hours I met people from far away lands, of different backgrounds all the while enjoying a cup of chai tea. This was one of the most remarkable moments I’ve ever experienced – To sit in a group with people only moments before were so foreign to me, and then became instant friends.

As you can see, it only takes a small gesture to touch the lives of others in a positive way. So I’d like to suggest you do something like Guisepi and offer a little cup of peace to humanity.
